BRUNSWICK COUNTY — An area in Navassa was exposed to a chemical, causing homes and businesses to be evacuated, as well as road closures Saturday.

Brunswick County Emergency Management and first responders were on the scene of the hazmat situation at American Distillation Company, 10519 Royster Road, involving the release of a chlorine-type substance. Crews found a 200-pound bag leaking, and due to moisture exposure, was releasing gas.

Officials monitored and began cleanup.

Mt. Misery Road at I-140, Cedar Hill from I-140 to North Navassa and I-140 East at Highway 421 remain closed to traffic. As of press, there is no timeline on when the routes will reopen. Drivers are asked to continue avoid the areas as traffic has been congested along 421 near the Isabel Stellings Holmes Bridge.

According to Brunswick County officials, there is no threat outside of the incident area and the general public doesn’t need to take protective actions.

The few properties affected remain evacuated, with individuals to be informed by local authorities of their allowed return or next steps.

Brunswick County will share information with the public here should protective measures need to be taken.
