NEW HANOVER COUNTY — An electric vehicle caught fire Thursday evening on the Dam Cameron Bridge but there were no injuries.
The New Hanover County Fire Rescue responded to I-140 east bound on top of the bridge after an electric vehicle struck a large metal object in the roadway. The bottom of the car was torn open, which caused damage to the storage compartment where the batteries are located.
The fire, which originated underneath the car, was difficult to put out, according to a press release from NHC Fire Rescue. Crews had to place the car on its side and apply copious amounts of water to extinguish it.
Emergency responders assisting New Hanover County Fire Rescue include New Hanover County Fire Marshal’s Office, North Carolina Highway Patrol, New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, North Carolina Department of Transportation Bridge Maintenace and IMAP.
The driver safely exited the vehicle to call 911.
