SOUTHEASTERN N.C. — Passengers traveling via ferry in the state can now be alerted directly regarding delayed routes, weather impacts or mechanical issues.
The N.C. Department of Transportation has launched new text and email notifications as part of the Ferry Information Notification System (FINS). Those who sign up will receive alerts from the ferry terminals, disclosing delays, cancelations, service suspensions and those that have resumed.
“This is going to be a major benefit for our passengers,” Ferry Division Director Harold Thomas said in a press reelase. “Getting timely information on schedule interruptions will allow ferry riders to make informed decisions on when and where to travel.”
Prior, the ferries have relayed information via route-specific Twitter accounts. The ferry division will continue to send out notifications via Twitter during the FINS system transition period.
Passengers can sign up for FINS at www.ncdot.gov/fins, choose the ferry route and enter an email and phone number; to suspend texts, just reply “STOP.”
