WILMINGTON — The Cape Fear Public Utility Authority will start flushing its water system nightly throughout the summer.
The program begins Monday, May 1, 10 p.m. and will last through 6 a.m. CFPUA is flushing the Sweeney-Richardson Water System, serving the majority of its customers.
According to a press release from CFPUA, the routine maintenance program is conducted annually. Motorists and passersby should be aware of crews working and safely proceeds near work zones.
Flushing forces water through the pipes at high velocity helps remove sediment via fire hydrants. The process does not pose a threat to customers’ water and CFPUA does not anticipate any boiling-water advisories.
There may be some discoloration or periods of low pressure. “Customers who do experience discoloration are advised to run the cold water for at least one to three minutes to allow the lines to clear,” CFPUA advised in the release.
The week of May 1, flushing will take place overnight in the following areas:
- Downtown Wilmington (north of Market Street)
- Convention Center area
- North Fifth Avenue
- Brooklyn Arts District
- Robert Taylor Homes area
- Northside (west of North Eighth Street)
- Northside (east of North Eighth Street)
- Love Grove
- North 16th Street
- Downtown Wilmington (south of Market Street)
- Castle Street
- Wooster Street
- Dawson Street
- Cape Fear Memorial Bridge area
- Robert Strange Park
- Castle Street
- Dawson Street
- Wooster Street
- South 16th Street
