“This will be a chance for our community to come together to reflect and honor the life and work of Deb, and to dedicate a live oak tree that will grow, plant roots, and forever be a symbol of her love for this community,” Board of Commissioners Chair Bill Rivenbark said in the release. “We hope that those who knew Deb can attend for fellowship, sharing of memories, and reflecting on Deb’s life of service.”
All who knew the commissioner are welcomed to attend; carpooling is suggested due to limited parking at Airlie Gardens.
Hays was elected as a New Hanover County commissioner in December 2020 and served as vice-chair until 2022.
Hays was board chair for Wilmington Downtown Inc., an organization that promotes economic growth and business development for Wilmington’s historic downtown. She served on the Wilmington Housing Authority, Cape Fear Museum advisory board, and Cape Fear Public Transportation Authority/WAVE Transit over the last few years.
Hays’ work extended beyond the political and into charitable works. She often volunteered for nonprofit agencies including Wilmington Area Rebuilding Ministry (WARM), Lump to Laughter and Habitat for Humanity.
She also worked as a relator and broker for Intracoastal Realty.
Hays was visiting family when she suddenly passed away at age 64 on Saturday, March. 25. Her obituary has been posted on PCD’s site here.
