WILMINGTON — Over the last week, at least five people in Wilmington have been shot, leaving three injured and two dead. The latest shooting took place Saturday night, leaving a man dead after he was shot and crashed his vehicle.
According to the Wilmington Police Department (WPD), a 44-year-old man was found dead on the 1000 block of Ann Street. Officers arrived around 11:30 p.m. and found a white Chevy Blazer crashed into a utility pole and the victim dead next to the vehicle.
The victim was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center, but was pronounced dead on arrival. WPD is withholding his name until the next of kin are notified.
Officers were later able to determine the shooting took place about a block away on Gores Row before the victim’s vehicle traveled down the road and crashed, according to WPD.
The most recent string of shootings began on July 4 when a dispute between a victim and his’s girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend turned violent. The Several days later, and a few blocks away, another man was shot. On Thursday a vehicle on Carolina Beach Road opened fire on a second vehicle while both were driving, killing a 15-year-old and badly wounded another victim. WPD has not indicated that these shootings have been related.
No arrests in Saturday night’s shooting have been made at this time. Police are asking anyone with information to contact the Wilmington Police Department at 910-343-3609.
