Wilmington man arrested and charged with first-degree murder

WILMINGTON — The Wilmington Police Department has made an arrest for the murder of a 56-year-old man earlier this month.

“Erick Gibbs, 29, has been arrested for the murder of George Porter on January 5, 2020. He is charged with first-degree murder, attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon and possession of a firearm by a felon, and is being held at the New Hanover County Jail without bond,” according to a WPD press release.

According to police, the murder took place around 1 a.m. on Jan. 5 on South 4th Street.

“Upon arrival they found two men suffering from gunshot wounds. George Porter III, 56, died a short time later at NHRMC. The second victim, 52-year-old David Jackson Jr., was transported to the hospital in serious condition and has since been released. Witnesses say the shooting happened after several males came into the residence attempting to rob the individuals inside and began shooting,” according to the release.
