WILMINGTON — Hurricane Dorian is making its way out to sea as residents around the Cape Fear Region breath a collective sigh of relief as damages from the storm appear, so far, minimal. But Just because Dorian is heading out residents should keep in mind that the Atlantic Hurricane Season is still underway and continue to be prepared for more storms.
Currently, there are two other systems in the Atlantic, including Tropical Storm Gabriel which appears to have re-formed as of Saturday morning (on Friday it was listed as a post-tropical storm or cyclone remnant).
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is issuing advisories for Gabriel – on Saturday morning located about 1000 miles west-southwest of the Azores – with potential impact in the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico.
NHC is also monitoring a second system.
“A broad area of low pressure associated with a tropical wave is producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms a couple of hundred miles west of the Cabo Verde Islands. Gradual development of this system is possible and a tropical depression could form by the
middle of next week while the system moves westward across the eastern and central tropical Atlantic Ocean,” according to NHC.
There is a medium chance – about 60 percent – that a tropical storm will develop over the next five days. It is still too early to tell what the possible impact of these systems could be, if any, to the United States, but they will be worth watching.
