WILMINGTON — The University of North Carolina Wilmington will host an event Friday to benefit students, faculty, and staff who were affected by Hurricane Florence.
The UNCW Arts Department will present “The Arts of Survival: Emerging from the Storm,” Friday evening, featuring an “evening of visual art, music, dance, and theater.” Proceeds from the event will go towards UNCW’s Hurricane Relief Funds.
The Hurricane Relief Funds cover both students and employees hit hard by the storm — those who have “exhausted all other resources.” The funds provide one-time grants that don’t have to be repaid (although they are in some cases taxed as income.)
For students, the funds provide:
- Emergency or temporary housing expenses
- Food
- Essential utilities (e.g. electric, gas, water)
- Medical expenses
- Other expenditures that would otherwise prevent continued enrollment
- Academic supplies (books, technology, etc., not included in tuition and fees)
- Essential personal belongings damaged or lost to Hurricane Florence
For employees, funds provide:
- Emergency or temporary housing expenses
- Food
- Essential utilities (e.g. electric, gas, water)
- Medical expenses
- Replacing essential personal belongs due to Hurricane Florence
UNCW’s “The Arts of Survival” will be held Friday, Oct. 26 beginning at 6 p.m.
