PLEASURE ISLAND—Construction has begun on the Island Greenway Project, a 1.2-mile path that connects Carolina Beach to Kure Beach.
The 10-foot wide path is being developed in partnership with Military Ocean Terminal Sunny Point (MOTSU), the base of which is across the river in Brunswick County. MOTSU maintains ownership of the land.

Overall, the project is expected to cost $1.1 million. In October, Wilmington Urban Area Metropolitan Planning Organization(WMPO) approved contributing $167,000. Carolina Beach contributed $197,083 and received a federal match of $788,333 to develop the federally-owned land.
The path will include military-grade fencing along a multi-use path, beginning at Mike Chappell Park in Carolina Beach and continuing south toward Alabama Avenue in Kure Beach.
The project is expected to be completed by mid-summer of this year. Though signs have been erected to alert motorists of large trucks and development activity between the two beach towns, construction should not create road closures, according to Jerry Haire, project manager for the path.
“Thus far we haven’t had any road closures and there aren’t any scheduled in the near future,” Haire wrote in an email.
On May 21, Carolina Beach announced it had made good progress on the project and that crews were preparing to install the remainder of stormwater systems and lay fabric and gravel on its Facebook page.
