Utility authority: 4,500 gallons of wastewater spills into Pages Creek tributary

Officials with the Cape Fear Public Utility Authority (CFPUA) are investigating an overflow that dumped thousands of gallons of wastewater into a tributary of Pages Creek on Sunday.

CFPUA crews responded to a sewer overflow that was reported at about 11 a.m. near the intersection of Bayshore Drive and Scorpion Drive, according to Mike McGill, spokesman for the authority. Approximately 4,500 gallons of wastewater reached a creek branch that serves as a tributary of Pages Creek.

“Roots infiltrating a manhole blocked sewer flow, creating the overflow,” McGill said. “The overflow was stopped at 12:1 a.m., when CFPUA crews removed the blockage.”

Pages Creek is one of seven creeks monitored by county officials in New Hanover County.
