ATKINSON — A wildfire that started Wednesday evening in Pender County is around 30% contained, according to the Pender County Fire Marshal’s Office.

The fire started on Whitehall Plantation Game Land and has burned roughly 275 acres. The Atkinson Volunteer Fire Department indicated on social media the fire ignited in an area where a fire previously burned at the beginning of the month.

Crews have contained the perimeter around 3.5 miles, and no homes or structures are threatened, No injuries to civilians or emergency personnel have been reported at this time either.

The North Carolina Forest Service and the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission have joined crews on the scene to suppress the fire and prevent further spread. According to the fire marshal, area residents can expect to smell smoke for an extended period of time as efforts continue.

A burn ban remains in effect across the state since March 28 due to ongoing drought conditions adding to elevated fire risks. The greater tri-county region has not receive rain in more than two weeks.

The ban applies to burning leaves, brush, and debris, as well as utilizing wood campfires, fire pits, and charcoal grills (especially in state parks), with violators facing a $100 fine plus court costs and potential fire suppression costs.

“Even the smallest fire can quickly grow out of control,” a release from the fire marshal’s office detailed. “Outdoor burning of any kind is strictly prohibited during this time. Your cooperation is critical in preventing additional wildfires and ensuring the safety of our community.”
