Winter weather closures, delays for Tuesday, Feb. 3

As snow continues to refreeze overnight on roadways, due to frigid temperatures permeating the region, area schools, colleges and other facilities continue to announce closures. (Port City Daily/Brenna Flanagan)

SOUTHEASTERN N.C. — As snow continues to refreeze overnight due to frigid temperatures permeating the region, area schools, colleges and other facilities continue to announce closures.

The National Weather Service in Wilmington has issued a very cold air mass and gusty winds to produce dangerous cold conditions through early Tuesday morning. It could continue to impact hazardous travel with melting snow freezing on infrastructure.

Below is a list, in alphabetical order, with updates coming in throughout Monday — check back as more are added.

Bald Head Island Village — Retreat scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, Feb. 3-4, has been cancelled. The regular meeting is scheduled to take place on Wednesday at 10 a.m. on Zoom; see the agenda here.

Town of Belville / Belville Riverwalk Park — Has been closed throughout the storm, but reopens at 10 a.m. on Tuesday.

Brunswick Community College — Brunswick Community College will be closed Tuesday, Feb. 3, because of hazardous road conditions.

Brunswick County Government — The government offices have been closed but will reopen at 10:30 a.m., as will the county library branches.

Brunswick County Parks — They will remain closed and will reopen once park conditions are assessed and deemed safe. All county programs, rentals, and leagues are canceled until further notice.

Brunswick County Landfill: Reopens on Tuesday, Feb. 3, at 10 a.m. The convenience centers are normally closed on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays. Centers will reopen on their regular schedules Wednesday, Feb. 4.

Brunswick County GFL Curbside Cart Collection: GFL Environmental is still assessing road conditions and other factors to determine if they can conduct collections on Tuesday. Call 910-253-4177 or check website for updates.

Brunswick County Schools  —  Closed Tuesday, Feb. 3m with Wednesday, Feb. 4, being a remote learning day. As well the BC Board of Education meeting scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 3, and has been rescheduled for Thursday, Feb. 12, 6 p.m., to be held in the Cape Fear Room of the Center of Applied Sciences and Technology (The COAST), 1109 Old Ocean Hwy in Bolivia. 

Cape Fear Academy — To close on Tuesday, Feb. 3, to ensure that road conditions in Wilmington and surrounding areas are safe. Resuming normal operations on Wednesday, Feb. 4.

Cape Fear Community College — Continues remote instruction and operations on Tuesday due to persistent hazardous road conditions. All CFCC locations will be closed, and all scheduled events will be cancelled. Additionally, the Bonnie Sanders Burney Child Development Center will be closed Tuesday.

Cape Fear Public Utility Authority — Has been closed but reopens Tuesday, Feb. 3, at 10 a.m. at 235 Government Center Dr.

New Hanover County Government — Operations resume at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, to include county offices, facilities, libraries, the landfill, Household Hazardous Waste facility, and other services.

New Hanover County Parks — County parks, including the Arboretum, and Airlie Gardens will remain closed to the public on Tuesday as icy conditions in these outdoor areas continue to improve.

New Hanover County and Pender County Courts — Closed Tuesday.

NHC Schools Board of Education Meeting — Postponed its regularly scheduled Feb. 3 meeting until Monday, Feb. 9, at 5 p.m.

New Hanover County Schools — Tuesday, Feb. 3, will be a snow day for all NHC schools.

Pender County Schools — Due to continuing cold weather and travel concerns, PCS will have a remote learning day on Tuesday, Feb. 3; it does not pertain to Penderlea students as they operate on a year-round schedule and are scheduled to be off for a mandatory teacher workday. Also, all extracurricular activities are canceled Tuesday. Teachers will provide assignments and instructions through their usual online platforms. We will provide an update to Wednesday’s schedule on Tuesday as we continue to monitor conditions across Pender County.

Southport / Fort Fisher Ferry — Departs Southport at 1 p.m., 2:30 p.m. and 4 p.m., and departs Fort Fisher at 1:45 p.m., 3:15 p.m. and 4:45 p.m.

Town of Leland — Facilities open Feb. 3 at 10 a.m.

YWCA of the Lower Cape Fear — The Aquatics Center will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 7:25 p.m. on Feb. 3, and the Bright Futures Childcare Center will operate from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

UNCW — To remain closed for classes, activities and campus events through Tuesday, Feb. 3. A university update about classes and operations on Wednesday, Feb. 4 will be sent by noon on Tuesday unless conditions warrant earlier notification. For employees, UNCW remains in Condition 2 (Suspended Operations) under the Adverse Weather Policy until further notice.
