BRUNSWICK COUNTY — The legal case involving Brunswick County Planning Board Chair Clifton “Clif” Cheek has concluded with a not guilty verdict in district court.
On Jan. 2, 2026, Judge Scott L. Ussery cleared Cheek of a misdemeanor charge of domestic violence. The charge stemmed from a November 2025 incident involving a personal matter with a family member.

Following the ruling, the Cheek family provided a statement to Port City Daily expressing gratitude for the resolution:
“Our family experienced a difficult and deeply personal situation in November 2025 that became public. The legal process has now concluded, and Clifton “Clif” Cheek was found NOT GUILTY of the domestic violence charge on January 2, 2026, in Brunswick County District Court. We respect the judicial system and are grateful this matter has been resolved.”
The family emphasized their desire to move forward privately while remaining committed to public service.
Cheek has served as the chair of the Brunswick County Planning Board since late 2024. In addition to his role on the board, he is currently an active candidate in the 2026 Republican primary for the Brunswick County Board of Commissioners District 1 seat.
According to the family, Cheek remains focused on county issues, including “strong schools, public safety, responsible budgeting, smart growth planning, and protecting quality of life.”
Cheek’s term on the planning board is currently set to expire in June 2027.
