According to an arrest warrant, Cheek was taken into custody by the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office on Sunday, Nov. 9, following allegations of using physical force against his minor child. The warrant alleges Cheek used physical force against the 17 year old, by “grabbing the victim and tackling him to the ground.”
Cheek was held under a $1,000 secured bond and released on Monday, Nov. 10. He did not immediately respond to Port City Daily’s request for comment on the charges or his status on the planning board.
In a statement provided to Port City Daily on Monday, Brunswick County communications director Meagan Kascsak confirmed the county is aware of the charges.
“Out of respect to due process, Brunswick County and the County Commissioners are not able to comment on the matter until the legal process has run its course,” Kascsak said.
Cheek was appointed to the Brunswick County Planning Board in August 2021 and has served as its chair since late 2024. In this position, Cheek has recently cast tie-breaking votes on large-scale residential projects, including the almost 1,700-home Hooper Tract development approved in August.
In addition to his appointed role, Cheek is an active candidate for the 2026 Republican Party for Brunswick County Commissioner for District 1. He announced his candidacy in September, running on a platform focused on managing growth and supporting local business owners.
Cheek is scheduled to appear in Brunswick County District Court on Dec. 19.
