We start this week catching up on the fallout from the last few weeks in the New Hanover County School system. With several former top administrators gone, and the public’s trust shaken, what comes next?
Also, as it becomes increasingly clear that something is deeply wrong with the administration of the school system — and has been for time — a new petition is circulating asking why the Laney High School football stadium is still named for former Deputy Superintendent Dr. Rick Holliday, who is at the center of many allegations against the schools.
Also this week, after months of requests, the state finally turned over hundreds of requested emails concerning the investigation into Surf City Councilman Jeremy Shugarts. While many questions still remain, we can now say the initial complaint against Shugarts was politically motivated — filed by fellow councilman Buddy Fowler.
Plus, we’ve seen a lot of recent social media conversations about changing speed limits and installing speed bumps in subdivisions and neighborhoods. So, we looked into what it takes to get that done. Turns out, it’s not at all easy.
