WILMINGTON — After closing in February on 25 acres of land to build a new park on Greenville Loop Road, the City of Wilmington has announced its first public information session to garner feedback on what the public wants to see constructed.
Attendees will have the opportunity to share ideas, including desired amenities, with project partners and design teams. The event will take place May 2 at the MLK Center, 401 S. 8th St., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The $9.75-million land buy came to fruition with $7.75 million from The Endowment and a $1-million investment from each the City of Wilmington and New Hanover County. Part of the deal is for the city to activate the park within five years, per The Endowment’s stipulations.
However, the city is on the hook for bringing the project to life, with Becky Hawke, Wilmington city manager, estimating it could cost another $10 million at least for added infrastructure. The end cost depends on design aesthetics and the extent to which they’re executed.
According to the city, the new park aligns with the Comprehensive Parks, Recreation + Open Space Master Plan, to strengthen connections across Wilmington’s network of green spaces. The park will be located near Bradley Creek Elementary School, with a frontage of its land connecting to a pending multi-use trail to be built along Greenville Loop Trail
The first community engagement event hosted by the city will include family-friendly activities, games, and food trucks from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. At 1 p.m., design teams will provide a brief recap of key themes and feedback shared during the event.
A digital survey will also launch on May 2 to encourage community input.
