WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH — Communities In Schools of Cape Fear is hosting its annual fundraiser Jan. 1, inviting people to take a dip in the Atlantic Ocean for a good cause.

So far 19 plunge teams and hundreds of plungers have signed up to compete for awards, such as best costume or most money raised. CIS hopes to reach 1,500 registrants by Plunge Day.

The event — taking place on the southside of the Oceanic Pier at 703 S. Lumina Ave. — will have music, games, contests and refreshments. Participants will plunge at noon.

Registration is $10 to $35 and proceeds will benefit more than 22,000 students to stay in school and graduate. Communities in Schools provides programs and services — tutoring, mental health counseling, behavioral interventions, mentorship and afterschool programs — to reduce the region’s dropout rate.
