Arts and athletics collide next weekend with a first-ever midtown Wilmington race.
The 5K and fun run, hosted by Cameron Art Museum (CAM) and presented by Live Oak Bank and other sponsors, is set for 7:30 a.m. this Saturday at the museum on the corner of 17th Street and Independence Boulevard. CAM has partnered with 5 Star Race Productions and Champion Chip Timing for the first annual event, aimed to raise awareness of the area while also raising funds for the museum’s various outreach programs.
“This race showcases the cultural beauty and art in our city’s midtown district,” race organizer Jayme Bednarczyk said.
It starts within CAM’s Pyramid Park, with runners moving on through Forks Historical Site, nearby Halyburton Park and the Gary Shell Cross-City Trail. It finishes up under Mel Chin’s sculpture, “The Structure of Things Given and Held,” near CAM’s parking lot.
Partially shaded and “flat and fast,” the Art Moves 5K and Minnie’s Mile Fun Run are ideal for serious competitors and casual strollers alike, a CAM spokeswoman said. Minnie’s run is designed for beginners and children of all ages. Parents with jogging strollers and special needs participants are also welcomed.
Fittingly, runners and walkers are encouraged to come in costumes, with prizes awarded to the best in the bunch. Local artisans have created original medals for finishers in both races, and top 5K runners in various age groups will receive additional awards.
Mr. Mark of the Broccoli Brothers will lead children’s activities, and there will be live music and a post-race awards ceremony and party, during which prize drawings will be held. Spectators are encouraged to cheer on the racers and stay for the after-party.
