Over the course of the past week or so, local high school athletes have announced their college commitments in addition to a few already in college who have chosen to transfer from their current school.
While North Brunswick and West Brunswick High Schools may be cross-county rivals, a few softball players will soon be teammates after deciding to play at the same school next year. A pair of basketball standouts will be looking to make an impact for new programs heading into the 2016-17 season.
Trae Bryant will be returning home from the western part of the state for the time being after Cape Fear Community College Head Coach Ryan Mantlo announced via Twitter that Bryant would be joining the Sea Devils program for his sophomore season.
“We are excited to welcome Trae to the family,” said Mantlo. “He will bring a wealth of talent along with his experience as a division one player to an already talented team. He fits our style and I expect him to have a terrific season.”
Bryant, who is finishing up his freshman year at UNC-Asheville, announced his decision to leave the school earlier this month. He saw action in 22 of 34 games played for the Bulldogs, averaging 11.1 minutes per game.
Former Ashley and New Hanover High School hoopster Ridell Camidge will also be wearing a new jersey come next fall as Camidge has transferred from UNC-Charlotte to Division II Tarleton State University in Stephenville, Texas.
Camidge played in 28 games during his sophomore season at Charlotte under Coach Mark Price. He spent his freshman year at Cloud Community College in Kansas and still has two years of eligibility remaining.
Athletics at the junior college level often serves as a great stepping stone each year and Cape Fear Community College women’s basketball player Monica Alexander also signed her National Letter of Intent to Clayton State University in Georgia on Monday.
Alexander was named National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region 10 First Team All Region this past season. She started in 30 games and averaged 10.6 points per game to help the Sea Devils finish 27-3, including a sixth place finish at the NJCAA National Tournament in Overland Park, Kansas. This marked the first time in school history the Lady Sea Devils advanced to this prestigious tournament.
