Ashley improves to 5-1; big expectations this season

Ashley Volleyball

The Ashley High School Volleyball team defeated Jacksonville on the road last night in straight sets (25-14, 25-19, 25-14). The Eagles improved to 5 and 1 on the year.

With league play getting underway this week, there are already teams in the area jockeying to be the early front runners in what should be an exciting season. At least four to five local teams could very well be looking to make some noise in the State Tournament later on this year. In the 4A Mid-eastern Conference, Ashley is currently 5-1 with their only loss coming on the road to a state champion contender in DH Conley, last week. “The girls battled back and forth, but were unable to pull it out at the end.” Coach Larry Salefsky said. One win this year was at home against DH Conley in a closely played 3 games to 2 match. Ashley also beat, in straight sets-the 2 time defending Eastern Central Conference Champs in Topsail High School.

The team is stacked with senior talent as outside hitters Emery McGee and Brandi Thomas have combined for more than 100 kills. (Senior)Kara Ploter has 123 digs through 6 games and (Senior) MacKenzie O’Connell is the team leader in assists, with 117. (Junior) Addison Garrigus also sets for the big hitters. She has 71 assists on the season while (Junior) middle hitter Felecity Havens leads Ashley with 51 kills.
The Eagles will host an invitational this Saturday at Ashley. Teams attending the weekend tournament include: Ashley, East Chapel Hill, Northwest Guilford and South Central.
Another powerhouse in the Mideastern Conference should be the Hoggard Vikings. Hoggard is coming off a trip to the 4A State Championship last year and the Vikings are currently undefeated, at 5-0. Check back here at www.portcitydaily.com for the latest updates on the area teams.
