WILMINGTON — The Amazon show slated to start rolling cameras by April has announced an actor best known as Jovie in the hit holiday film “Elf” and more recently as Jess Day on the seven-year run of “New Girl.”

According to iMDB, Zooey Deschanel will be the lead actress in “Merv” — a romantic comedy that centers on a couple who breaks up and the dog they share doesn’t handle it so well. While on a Florida vacation to cheer the pup up, Russ runs into Anna where sparks rekindle.

Deschanel has been seen in “(500) Days of Summer,” as well as most recently in Apple TV’s series, “Physical.” She also is a musician, best known as one-half of the group She and Him with M. Ward, formed in 2006 in Oregon.

“Merv” is penned by husband-and-wife writing team Dane Clark and Linsey Stewart and directed by Jessica Swale. Swale got her start in the entertainment industry by writing the 2013 play “Blue Stockings,” which premiered at Shakespeare’s Globe (it was produced last year by Cape Fear Community College’s theater department). Her original works also are being adapted for the screen currently: “Nell Gwynn” as a film and “Blue Stockings” as a TV series.

Produced by LightWorkers Media and Matt Baer Films, “Merv” will begin rolling in April. A location has been revealed in Kure Beach, as a film permit has been submitted according to a letter sent to the town. Mervinator Production INC. wants to film April 17-19, 22-26, and 29-30, with rain dates for May 1-3.

Town council will review the permit request at its March 18 meeting, particularly how parking and street closures will be handled, pedestrian traffic at impacted beach accesses and waiving the ordinance of dogs on the beach.
