WILMINGTON — It was one of the few concerts where surrounding sounds of nature blended seamlessly into the instrumentals of Mexican guitar virtousos Rodrigo y Gabriela.

As the cicadas buzzed, the frogs croaked and the birds chirped, the electric riffs of Rodrigo Sanchez and percussive knocks and strums of Gabriela Quintero on acoustic guitar permeated Greenfield Lake Amphitheater on Friday, June 23.

For two hours, fans were treated to the team’s vast string talent, as they played through their latest release, “Between Thoughts…A New World.” Sounds expanded into world music, nuevo flamenco, rock, electronic beats and noise rock, as well as heavy metal.

A backdrop of geometric and psychedelic visuals provided movement to the rhythms. Quintero, giddy by the crowd’s cheers and undivided attention, took the mic to thank fans for the love.

“We love you too,” she said halfway through the set before taking on a new track, “Monster,” from the 2023 record. “Though our music doesn’t have lyrics, it still tells a story. This one is about the monsters in your head.”

Rodrigo y Gabriela met as teenagers in Mexico City and joined forces in Ireland in the early aughts, opening for Irish singer-songwriter Damien Rice, who helped put them on the map.

Opening the show was Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter J.S. Ondara. He hooked listeners with his stark guitar-playing and singing, easily conjuring the rich tapestry of Tracy Chapman.
