WILMINGTON — Michele Sutton Blackley, a beloved child of God, wife, mother, grandma (aka “Grandma Shell”), sister, daughter and friend, passed away peacefully on May 8, 2026, in Wilmington, NC, at the age of 62. Born on March 7, 1964, in Raleigh, NC, Michele lived a life full of faith, love, passion, and dedication.
A graduate of Apex High School’s Class of 1982, Michele was a woman who found joy in the simple pleasures of life. Her love for gardening blossomed into a successful career as she owned and operated a greenhouse and nursery. Michele’s green thumb and nurturing spirit were evident in every plant she tended to, and her passion for nature was contagious to all who knew her.
During the years she and Philip lived in Cary, NC, Michele was a dedicated member of the Cary Garden Club. Through the club, she shared her love for plants and gardening with others, inspiring many with her knowledge, creativity, and enthusiasm.
In 2022, Michele and Philip made the move to Carolina Beach, a place that she fell in love with over the years and reflected her lifelong love of the outdoors. The Blackley Family cottage was her favorite place to unwind, take long walks, connect with nature, and spend long days on the beach with her family.
Michele was a devoted fan of NC State. She also enjoyed the fun of card and board games, where her competitive spirit, strategic mind, and playful banter always came through.
Her commitment to her family was unwavering, and she took great pride in her children and grandchildren. Michele’s compassion and strength were especially evident when she lovingly cared for her mother, Mandi Sutton, during her illness.
Michele is preceded in death by her mother, Mandi Sutton, and her brother, Scott Sutton. She is survived by her devoted husband of nearly 39 years, Philip Blackley; her sons, Joshua Blackley and his wife, Shelby, and Philip Scott Blackley; her daughters, Jesse Brooks and her husband, Brice, and Leah Koenig and her husband, Cliff; her cherished grandchildren, Grace and Sutton; her father, Don Sutton; her sister, Laura Hamilton; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Memorial donations may be made to Lower Cape Fear LifeCare, honoring Michele’s generous spirit and her commitment to helping others.
Michele Sutton Blackley leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience, and inspiration. Her memory will forever be cherished by those who were fortunate enough to know her.
