WILMINGTON — Russell D. Collins, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, passed away peacefully at his home in Ivanhoe, NC, on May 7, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born on December 2, 1950, in New Hanover County, NC, Russell lived a full and meaningful life, reaching the age of 75.
Russell began his career as a welder, honing his skills on barges along the Cape Fear River. His diligence and talent did not go unnoticed, leading to an opportunity at General Electric, where he became a revered and loyal employee for over 30 years. His work ethic and commitment were admired by all who had the privilege of working alongside him.
Outside of his professional life, Russell had several passions that brought him joy. He loved watching TV game shows and was an avid fan of NASCAR, especially cherishing the days when Dale Earnhardt, “The Intimidator,” took to the track. He maintained a home gym, staying active until his cancer diagnosis, and found peace working in his yard.
After retiring, Russell founded a cherished tradition by organizing regular breakfast gatherings with his former co-workers. This practice of camaraderie and friendship continues to this day, a testament to the bonds he forged during his lifetime. Russell was also an alumnus of John T. Hoggard High School, where he laid the foundations for his life’s journey.
Preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Virginia Collins, his sister Betsy, and his brothers, AB, Steve, and Wayne, Russell leaves behind a legacy of love and family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Diane T. Collins; his children, Michelle Britt and her husband Brandon, Chastity C. Ward, and Russell Collins, Jr.; his grandchildren, Abby Britt (fiancé Andrew Hill), Megan Carry (Ben), Hannah Lemasters (Jon), Hayley W. Moradel (Bradley), Ryan, Riley, and Ayden Collins; and his great-grandchildren, Emerson, Eliza, Harper, Hudson, Katie Rose, and two bonus great-grandchildren, Avery and Josie. He is also survived by his siblings, Janet Norton and Stanley Collins and his wife Debbie, along with many loving nieces and nephews.
In accordance with his wishes, private family services will be held to honor Russell’s memory.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Pender County Humane Society, where Russell’s much-loved Bonnie Blue was adopted.
Russell D. Collins touched the lives of many with his kindness, strength, and unwavering dedication to his loved ones. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.
