WILMINGTON — Viola May Neely, a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on May 31, 2025, in Wilmington, North Carolina, at the age of 103. Born on February 26, 1922, in Long Branch, New Jersey, Viola lived a life full of love, music, and community spirit.
Viola spent her working years as a dedicated food worker with the Army and Air Force Exchange Service, where she was known for her commitment and warm smile. Beyond her professional life, Viola was deeply passionate about her interests and hobbies. A devoted fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers, she found joy in cheering for her favorite team alongside fellow fans.
Her musical talent was a source of happiness for many. As a cherished member of the Goodtimers Band for 20 years, Viola brought smiles to countless faces with her spirited performances on the double jingle tambourine and kazoo. The band frequently played at nursing homes and senior centers, sharing the gift of music with those who needed it most.
Viola was also a devoted member of Pine Valley Methodist Church in Wilmington, where her faith and fellowship were central to her life. Her presence within the church community will be fondly remembered and deeply missed.
Viola is preceded in death by her parents, George Francis Sr. and Minnie Doyle; her husband, Oris William Neely, Sr.; and her brothers, George, Jack, and Billy Doyle. She leaves behind a loving family who will continue to celebrate her memory: sons Oris William “Buster” Neely Jr. and his wife Ellen of Myrtle Beach, SC, Frank “Kirk” Neely and his wife Linda of Cedar Run, New Jersey and daughter Trudy Wilder and her husband Steve of Wilmington, NC. Viola’s legacy also includes seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren, who will carry forward her warmth and kindness.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Pine Valley Methodist Church, 3788 Shipyard Boulevard, Wilmington, NC 28403 on Tuesday, June 10, 2025 at 11:00 am, where family and friends will gather to honor and celebrate the remarkable life of Viola May Neely with food and fellowship.
