LELAND — A 0.29-mile multi-use path to extend from South Navassa Road to Loop Road is coming to Leland.
The Wilmington Urban Area Metropolitan Planning Organization awarded the town $973,600 as part of its Fiscal Year 2029-2030 Locally Administered Projects Program. These funds will go toward preliminary engineering and construction of the 10-foot-wide multi-use path.
The path will improve connectivity and provide safe, accessible transportation options for pedestrians and cyclists. It will connect to an existing multi-use path and connect residential developments, including Village Road, the Town’s Gateway District, Sturgeon Creek, and future recreational amenities, according to the town.
Leland considered the project a high-priority as part of its Integrated Mobility Plan, and it aligns with the Gullah Geechee Heritage Trail Feasibility Study and the WMPO 2050 Metropolitan Transportation Plan.
WMPO’s Locally Administered Projects support transportation improvements regionwide, including federal-aid highways, bridges, tunnels, public roads, pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure, and transit capital improvements. Other projects awards LAP funds this year include S. Lake Park Boulevard Sidewalk for $921,600 in Carolina Beach, New Centre Drive Sidewalks and Pedestrian Signals for $1.696 million in Wilmington and Medical Center Drive Sidewalk and Roadway Improvements for $1.84 million, also in Wilmington.
