Thomas Wilber “Tom” Yelton, Jr., 88

WILMINGTON — Thomas Wilber “Tom” Yelton, Jr., 88, of Wilmington, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on May 31, 2025. Born on January 19, 1937, in Rowan County, North Carolina, Tom lived a full and vibrant life dedicated to his family, work, and passions.

Tom was the cherished husband of Jean Poole Yelton, his loving companion through many years of shared joys and challenges. He was the proud grandfather to two adored grandsons, Brandon Yelton and Dylan Yelton, who brought him immense happiness and pride.

From a young age, Tom showed a remarkable enthusiasm for trucking, beginning his career behind the wheel even before graduating high school. His dedication and hard work culminated in the establishment of Yelton Trucking Company, which he owned and operated with distinction.

NASCAR racing was a passion for Tom, who found great delight in the sport’s thrill and the camaraderie it nurtured. Equally fond of the tranquility of fishing, Tom relished the peaceful moments spent casting lines and enjoying nature’s bounty. Above all else, Tom treasured his family and many friends, investing deeply in the lives of those he loved.

A man of faith, Tom was a long-time member of Longleaf Baptist Church in Wilmington. He attended services regularly and found strength and community in his church home as long as his health allowed.

In addition to his beloved son, Thomas Wilber Yelton III, who preceded him in death, Tom shared a special bond with all his family members and numerous friends who will miss him dearly.

At Tom’s request, no services will be held at this time.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that memorial contributions be made to Lower Cape Fear LifeCare, whose compassionate care exemplifies the kindness Tom extended throughout his life.

Tom’s legacy of integrity, love, and humor will live on in the hearts and minds of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
