SOUTHPORT — Sarah Johnson Benjamin, age 92, of Southport, NC, passed away on June 24, 2024. Sarah was born December 7, 1931 in Tucson, Arizona, daughter of the late Faustine Johnson and Charles Johnson.
Sarah graduated from Vassar College, and went on to teach English. Sarah went on a blind date with Stanley Benjamin, and they got married on August 13, 1954. They were married for 66 years, before Stans passing on November 10, 2020.
In 1976, Sarah and Stan bought Wakeman’s Garden Center in Trumbull CT, where she ran the flower shop, until they retired to St. James, Southport, NC in 2001.
Sarah enjoyed riding her horses, especially her last horse JJ. She also enjoyed Hummingbirds, dogs, cats, gardening and tennis. She also enjoyed singing, and sang for many years with the Sea Notes Choral Society in Southport, NC.
She is survived by her three children, Deborah Marques & husband Ron of Florida, David Benjamin of CT, and Caroline Sturgess & husband David of England, a grandson Kyle of CT, three step grandchildren, Miranda, Com & Jona, and a step great granddaughter Jemma Kemp-Collins, all of England.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister Laura Clare Townes.
A Memorial Service will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.
