It was while he was stationed at Fort Myer, VA that he met an Army brat, Joyce Burnop, who became his wife on September 19, 1964.  He received his MBA from Columbia University in 1965 and began his civilian career with DuPont in Camden, SC where two sons were born, Kevin Allen and Eric George.  From there the family moved to Corning NY for a job with Corning Glass Works.  After a year, they were transferred to Danville, VA where their third son, Brady Michael, was born.  They spent almost 50 years in Danville.  During this time, he made a major career change and became a successful Certified Financial Planner with Wheat First Securities in Martinsville and Danville.

He retired in 2001, then in 2018 Allen and Joyce moved to Porters Neck Village retirement community in Wilmington, NC, enjoying 5 years together there.  Allen was a loving and happy man who treasured his family and was so proud of his sons and grandchildren.

He leaves behind his wife of 58 years, Joyce, his sons, Kevin, Eric, and Brady and his grandchildren, Maggie Murphy (Sean), Allison Filzen (Jared), Nathaneal Allen, Simeon John, Isaac Brady, and Titus Hale, and Ezra, Zebulon and Vivian.  He was especially delighted by his first great grandchild, Isaiah Isaac Filzen.  He also leaves a treasured sister, Donna Putnam (Herbert), and a sister-in-law Janet Lanoue, both of North Adams, MA, and nieces Heather Boulger (Patrick) and Karen Shaffrick (Mark) and nephews, Richard Lanoue and Allen Putnam.
