WILMINGTON — Mary Moore Southerland, born October 10, 1948, in Wilmington, NC, to the late Ann Slocum Moore and James Edwin Moore, passed away peacefully at home on February 3, 2022, after her battle with Multiple Myeloma.
Mary is survived by her loving husband, Pate Southerland of 52 years, son, Dan Southerland, and wife, Amy Peacock Southerland, of Wilmington, daughter, Laurie Zeltzer and husband Joe Zeltzer, of Ridgewood, NJ, four grandchildren: Toby Southerland, Hudson Southerland, James Zeltzer, and Lizzy Zeltzer, brother, Jim Moore and wife, Nancy, of Wilmington, sister, Nancy Dombroski and husband, Tony, of Wilmington, and many nieces and nephews who loved their Aunt Mary.
Mary graduated from New Hanover High School in 1967 and UNCW in 1971 with a BA Degree in Business Administration. She thoroughly enjoyed her eighteen years working at Edward Jones with Carolyn Polston and Donna Piner as well as helping when needed at James E Moore Insurance Agency from the time she was a teenager until just a few months ago. She was a life-long member of St Andrews Covenant Presbyterian Church, the Carolina Yacht Club and the Pate Southerland “Whitewater Canoeing Team” early on.
Mary enjoyed loving on her four grandchildren Toby, Hudson, James and Lizzy. She had no choice but to enjoy sports (her father, older brother, husband, son, granddaughter and grandsons) and camping (her husband, the Kees, the Spakes, the Galloways and the Francises), but we are convinced she genuinely enjoyed both along with rides with Pate in her red VW Beetle convertible, going to the beach, and being with her family. Also, Mary was an avid walker. She enjoyed walking with her best friends, Sweetie Francis and Kathy Mayland. Mary welcomed everyone with warmth and love that came from her heart. She was a great listener and had a dry sense of humor. Some words that describe her are patient, kind, genuine, sincere, inclusive, dependable, loyal, and loving.
Mary will be missed by her family, for whom she provided a loving and cheerful home, and by her many friends.
Services for family and friends to celebrate her life will be held at St Andrews Covenant Presbyterian Church located at 1416 Market Street, Wilmington, NC 28401 at 2pm Saturday, February 12th, 2022. Reception to receive friends and family to be held in Brown Hall at the church immediately after the service. In lieu of flowers memorials in honor and memory of Mary’s life may be made to Lower Cape Fear Life Care (Hospice), V Foundation For Cancer Research and St. Andrews Covenant Presbyterian Church.
Share online condolences with the family, here, in the guestbook.
