Southport-Fort Fisher ferry to suspend operations Tuesday

SOUTHPORT — The Southport-Fort Fisher Ferry is suspending service for at least a week, starting this Tuesday.

The N.C. Department of Transportation announced Monday it is pausing operations while crews replace the fender system at the Southport terminal.

“During the replacement work, the crane barge Skyco will move into position at Southport to remove and replace the metal tubes and wooden bumpers that make up the fender system,” according to NCDOT.

The work is expected to take a week, contingent upon weather and equipment conditions.
