John “Eddie” Mintz Jr., 93, went home to heaven on Friday, Dec. 28, 2018. He was born Feb. 3, 1925, in Robeson County to John E. Mintz Sr. and Pearl Pendergraft Mintz.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Virginia Barnhill Mintz; sister, Ethel Millinor; and two brothers, Charles and Bill Mintz.

He is survived by his daughter, Brenda Platt (Thomas); grandsons, Chris Platt (Danielle) and Danny Platt (Amie); five great-grandchildren, Jake, Mia, Zoe, Stone and MaeBelle Platt; sister, Pat Wilkie (Roger); brother, Bobby Mintz; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Eddie attended North Carolina School for the Deaf in Morganton. He was the head cutter for Century Mills for nearly 45 years. He enjoyed woodworking and made many tiny birdhouses that he loved to give away. He enjoyed football, especially the Panthers and Tar Heels. The highlight of his week was a road trip to Lane’s Ferry Barbeque (many thanks to Kenny and Marie McManus, you made his Fridays!) Although deaf from the age of 18 months, he never considered himself handicapped and led a full and happy life. He never knew a stranger and always had a smile for everyone he met. We will miss you Gan Gan.

A funeral service will be held at noon, Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2019, at Coble Ward-Smith Funeral & Cremation Service. A visitation will be one hour prior to services. Interment will immediately follow services in Greenlawn Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
