Lyla Mae Wilson Burney, 91, retired from New Hanover Regional Medical Center

WILMINGTON — Lyla Mae Wilson Burney, 91, died Tuesday, May 8, 2018. She was born Nov. 9, 1926, in Brunswick County, a daughter of the late Lula Bell King Wilson and the late Dellie Gaston Wilson. She was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Roland Cowan Burney; and siblings, Walter C. Wilson, Craven C. Wilson, Eva Mae Wilson Robinson and Pauline Belle Wilson Babson.

Mrs. Burney graduated from Waccamaw High School in 1944. She was a dedicated employee of James Walker Memorial Hospital and New Hanover Regional Medical Center in the Emergency Department for 35 years until her retirement. She continued to serve others in need as a caregiver with Eldercare.

She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Burney is survived by her daughter, Carol Burney Wallace, of Nashville, Tennessee; grandson, Christopher M. Wallace of Brooklyn, New York; special nieces, Ernestine Robinson Moody of Candler, Judy Kay Ward of Nakina and Sara Burney Orrock of Bolivia; special grand-niece, Sabrina Ward; and many more cherished nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews and cousins.

The family extends their deep gratitude to the staff of NHRMC Emergency Department and Sixth Floor as well to Lower Cape Fear Hospice for the compassion and loving care provided to Mrs. Burney during her illness.

Visitation will be held from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., Saturday, May 12, at McKenzie Mortuary, Whiteville. Graveside services will follow at 2 p.m. at Hillcrest Cemetery, Lake Waccamaw.

Memorials may be made in Mrs. Burney’s name to Lower Cape Fear Hospice, New Hanover County Meals on Wheels, or the charity of one’s choice.
