SHALLOTTE — John Phillip Newton, 81, died Saturday, March 17, 2018.

Born June 22, 1936, in Scotland County, N.C., he was a son of the late Earl Newton and Veronica Scholl Newton. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, James Newton; and sister, Catherine Bream.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran, a retired educator, and a member of the American Legion.

Surviving are his wife, Virginia Donnelly Newton; daughter, Veronica Bandy (James) of Roanoke, Va.; sons, Matthew Newton (Laura) of Williamsburg, Va., and John J. Newton of Roanoke, Va.; brothers, Charles Newton of Mt. Carmel, Ill., Harry Newton of Hamlet, N.C., and Donald Newton of Monroe, La.; sister, Mary Anna Newton-Davis of Rockingham, N.C.; and four grandchildren.

A Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Tuesday, March 20, at St. Brendan The Navigator Catholic Church, Shallotte. Burial will be held at 12:30 p.m., Saturday, March 24, in the Sherwood Cemetery, Salem, Va. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m., Friday, March 23, at John M. Oakey Funeral Home, 305 Blvd., Salem.
