Audrey Faye Scott, of Wilmington, died Monday, Dec. 29, 2014, at Autumn Care of Myrtle Grove. She was 93.
Audrey was born July 22, 1921, in Leland, daughter of the late Edward Armond Ganey and Gretta Mae Russ Ganey. Her husband, Horace Mazzel Scott and sisters, Ina Mae Mintz, Vivian Tatum and Paula Sneeden, preceded her in death.
God was always first in her life. She knew not only was it important to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ but to belong to a church family. She poured her life into ministering to others as a member at Temple Baptist Church. She was a longtime member of the Mother’s Club as well as a counter for the Sunday offerings.
She started the Nancy Bradshaw Memorial Fund to offer financial assistance to students to go to college. Children and young people were most important to her, so she served as a leader to a young women’s mission group at church called the YWA’s. She chaperoned on weekends at the Youth’s Coffee House in the 1970s and accompanied the youth in the 1990s on their Youth Trips to Ridgecrest Baptist Assembly. She enjoyed young people as much as they enjoyed her.
Tithing to her church was a priority as well as missions. She also wanted children to have a loving home so she faithfully contributed to the Boys and Girls Homes of North Carolina.
Next to loving and serving God was loving and serving her family. She was a devoted and fun wife and mother. Her four sisters were precious to her. She enjoyed her grandchildren as well as her nieces and nephews not only loving them but teasing her as well. Her sense of humor lit up a room!
Her friends were a gift to her. They became her “family.” She “adopted” many as her own. When you walked into her house, she made you feel like you were home.
She had many special names but her most endearing was “Miss Leland.” This was due to the fact that in 1938 she had been crowned “Miss Leland.” She will always remain the “Queen” in our hearts.
She is survived by her son, Horace Keith Scott “Scotty” and his wife, Theresa, of Marshville; two daughters, Gretta Scott Holt and her husband, Gary, of Monroe and Audrey Scott Stanley and her husband, Kelly, of Wilmington; three grandchildren, Chris Scott, of Fort Mill, South Carolina, Amanda Holt Miller, of Indian Trail and Halie Scott, of Marshville; two great-grandchildren, Avery and Hannah Miller, of Indian Trail; her youngest sister, Elnora Sneeden, of Wilmington; and she also treasured her dear nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 2, 2015, at the residence of her daughter, Audrey and Kelly Stanley. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, 2014, at Temple Baptist Church with her son-in-law, the Rev. Kelly Stanley and the Rev. Del Parkerson officiating. Interment will follow at Oakdale Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Audrey’s memory may be made to the Boys and Girls Homes of North Carolina, 400 Flemington Drive, P.O. Box 127, Lake Waccamaw, NC 28450, or by e-mail: [email protected].
