Evelyn Wall Stanland, 94, 20-year Cape Fear Memorial Hospital volunteer

Evelyn Wall Stanland died Monday, Dec. 29, 2014, at the age of 94.

Evelyn was born in Murfreesboro, to Edward Fisher and Una Ruth Wall on April 11, 1920. Evelyn was preceded in death by her one and only love of 40 years, Alexander Barker Stanland Sr.; youngest son, Billy Edward Stanland; brother, Corbett Preston Wall; and both of her parents.

A faithful member of more than 50 years at Winter Park Baptist Church, she was always active in missions, Sunday school, visitation, WMU and dearly loved the library and reading books on a weekly basis.

Evelyn was a volunteer for 20 years at Cape Fear Memorial Hospital. She was a member and Past Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, Cape Fear Chapter 346.

She is survived by her two children, son, Alexander Barker Stanland Jr. and wife, Joan, of Wilmington; daughter, Evelyn S. Jones, of Wilmington; four grandchildren, Pamela Deweese and husband, Carl, Alexa Tarplee and husband, Brad, Bradley Jones and wife, Christina and Lesley A. Whitby; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

During her husband’s time in the U.S. Navy, Evelyn worked in Washington at the Marine Headquarters and Labor Dept. She was later transferred to the Luthrow Air Base in Wilmington where she retired and started her family.

Evelyn loved to travel with close friends. Most of all she loved the Lord and her family. Her strong faith and love was passed on to her children at a very young age. She was such a loving and compassionate woman and will be missed dearly by her family and friends.

The family would like to express their appreciation to her caregivers, Dr. Jill Finnagan at Wilmington Health and Jayne Shelton, Renee Mansfield and Sharon Lawrence from the In Home Care of the Lower Cape Fear Hospice Center. In addition, all the wonderful staff who took care of mother when she was at the hospice center her last days.

The family will receive visitors from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 1, 2015, at Andrews Mortuary Valley Chapel. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 2, 2015, at Winter Park Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Evelyn’s name may be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice Center or Winter Park Baptist Church Building fund.
