The Wilmington Urban Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (WMPO) will host the 36th annual River to Sea Bike Ride this weekend, adding a new kickoff event aimed at expanding community engagement around the long-running cycling tradition.
For the first time, organizers will hold a “Bike Ride Expo” on Friday, May 1, ahead of Saturday’s main ride. The event will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. at Empie Park’s first and second picnic shelters and will feature local organizations, businesses, and community groups focused on cycling, transportation, and outdoor recreation in the region.

The Expo is designed to build momentum ahead of the ride and connect participants with resources tied to Wilmington’s growing bicycle network and active transportation initiatives.
The River to Sea Bike Ride will follow on Saturday, May 2, with a scheduled start at 7 a.m. from the corner of Princess and 2nd streets in downtown Wilmington. The route follows the historic Wilmington Beach Car Line corridor, carrying more than 400 cyclists from downtown Wilmington to Wrightsville Beach and back in a group ride to promote safe, accessible biking across the region.
Additional event details and registration information are available online.
