WILMINGTON — Wilmington Health officially broke ground Friday on Midtown II, a three-story medical office building designed to expand clinical and diagnostic services in the Port City.

The 64,000-square-foot facility will be located off Gallery Park Drive, adjacent to the provider’s existing Midtown campus. The new building aims to act as a “one-stop shop” for patients, featuring a wide range of specialty clinics including cardiology, orthopedics, urology, dermatology, and vascular care.

“Midtown II represents an important step in our long-term commitment to expanding access to high-quality, coordinated care across southeastern North Carolina,” Wilmington Health CEO Jeff James said in a press release. “By bringing multiple services together in one location, we are creating a more connected healthcare experience that enhances collaboration among providers and improves outcomes for our patients.”

The facility is set to house advanced medical technology provided by General Electric, including new CT and MRI imaging capabilities. It will also feature a fully automated laboratory for high-precision testing and dedicated space for medical research. Wilmington Health currently operates one of the largest private research departments in the region, and the added space in Midtown II is expected to increase local access to emerging medical trials.

The project is a continuation of Wilmington Health’s long-term strategy to consolidate smaller offices into centralized, high-tech hubs. The “Midtown” campus approach began with the opening of their first Gallery Park Boulevard facility, which allowed the practice to move departments out of older, more crowded offices on Medical Center Drive.

Construction is expected to take approximately 15 months, placing the anticipated completion in the summer of 2027.
