SOUTHPORT — Officials had to respond to a neighborhood in Southport this week after residents received a scaly visitor.

On Tuesday, April 14, Southport Police and Animal Protective Services responded to a call about a 12-foot alligator in a resident’s driveway. By the time officers arrived, the reptile reached a neighbor’s porch and the NC Wildlife and Southport Police captured and relocated the alligator.

The City of Southport reminded residents, “no pet swamp puppies” as it shared North Carolina Wildlife’s alligator tips:

  • Always assume alligators are present
  • Never feed a gator
  • Don’t dispose of fish or food scraps in a body of water
  • Never harass, capture or handle an alligator
  • Be responsible for the people and pets
  • And maintain awareness anytime near or in a body of water.
