SOUTHPORT — Every quarter the Brunswick Nuclear Plant ensures its alarms are properly working and communications are secured at its facility near Southport.

As such, it will test its 38 sirens between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 9. The sounds will be heard within 10 miles of the the plant and will be blared at full-volume for five to 30 seconds; some sirens may required testing more than once, with follow-up maintenance testing needed after 11 a.m.

Because it is a test, local broadcasting stations will not interrupt regular programming to broadcast Emergency Alert System (EAS) messages. If it were a  real emergency, local radio and TV stations would broadcast information and instructions to the public.
