Man who burglarized LEO’s home in Carolina Beach last summer pleads guilty, receives sentence

The man arrested for burglarizing a law enforcement officer’s home in Carolina Beach last July pled guilty to the charges against him on Thursday, and was sentenced to up to 11-and-a-half years in the Department of Adult Correction.

Mid-burglary, on July 15, 2021, Gregory Chakmakis of Watauga County was apprehended by the LEO homeowner, who was getting home from his shift around 11 p.m.

Chakmakis fled into the “thick and swampy” woods, according to a Thursday afternoon news release from the district attorney’s office, starting a three-agency manhunt. The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office brought in canines and the helicopter, and located Chakmakis at a house on Sugar Loaf Court at around 1 a.m. that night. The press release notes that Chakmakis, wearing only his underwear, asked an officer during the arrest “where his pants were located and when the officer stated that he didn’t know, the defendant stated that he probably left them at the cops house he was coming out of.”

Chakmakis also stole two Smith & Wesson handguns from a truck in Kure Beach around the same time, an investigation from Kure Beach and City of Wilmington law enforcement found. He pled guilty to first degree burglary and two counts of possession of firearm by felon on Thursday. Judge R. Kent Harrell sentenced him to between 105 and 138 months in the Department of Adult Correction, according to the news release.
