WILMINGTON — Drivers traveling U.S. 421 south of the Interstate 140 junction in new Hanover County will have to follow an alternate route next week.
The N.C. Department of Transportation will temporarily close this less than 2-mile section of road at 6 a.m. Monday, so a CSX Corp. contractor can conduct maintenance and repairs to its railroad crossing. Its tracks cross U.S. 421 just south of Sutton Steam Plant Road, near the New Hanover Recycling Center.
A marked route will guide drivers on a roughly 10-mile detour via U.S. 74, N.C. 133 and I-140 at exits 14 and 17 around the railroad crossing under construction.
Repairs are anticipated to take up to five days but could be done in as early as three, weather pending.
NCDOT maintenance crews will assist the CSX contractor in removing asphalt around the railroad crossing. When work is complete, the contractor will replace the asphalt to help smooth the road for future travelers.
