UNCW to conduct 67-acre controlled burn

WILMINGTON — UNCW has scheduled for Tuesday a controlled burn on a select tract of land.

On the main campus, 67 acres will be set on fire mid-morning Jan. 4. In a press release, the campus noted it will take place in a longleaf pine forest bordered by Carleton Place, Clear Run Creek, Rose Avenue and UNCW forest areas.

Both smoke and odor will be present on campus and surrounding neighborhoods. Yet, the City of Wilmington fire officials and UNCW Environmental Health and Safety and facilities personnel will be on site to ensure minimal smoke exposure. It will burn at a low intensity and will only affect the ground covering, not trees.

“The controlled burn decreases the chances of a more intense and hazardous wildfire by destroying the fuel load of the accumulated layer of leaf litter and improves the health of the longleaf pine forest, which is a fire-dependent ecosystem,” according to the press release.
