New Hanover and Brunswick County Schools to provide meals to students during shutdown [Free Read]

SOUTHEAST N.C. — Following the announcement by Governor Roy Cooper that schools across the state would be closed due to concerns over Covid-19, the illness caused by the new coronavirus, New Hanover County Schools and Brunswick County Schools have announced their intentions to provide meals for students during the closures.

Below are the following details provided by the school systems.

New Hanover County

“Free breakfast and lunch for children 18 years and younger will be available for pick-up at 14 schools beginning on Monday, March 16. All sites are drive-through or walk-up sites only. No space will be provided for eating on-site and multiple meals may be picked up by parents and caregivers. Recipients should be prepared to drive up or walk up to the designated area and let staff know how many meals are needed,” according to NHCS.

Both meals will be provided at one time available for pickup.

“Lunch and the following morning’s breakfast will be provided beginning on Monday, March 16 for pick-up from 11 am-1 pm, Monday through Friday at the following schools: 

  • Rachel Freeman School of Engineering
  • Castle Hayne Elementary
  • Wrightsboro Elementary
  • Mary C. Williams Elementary
  • Pine Valley Elementary
  • Sunset Park Elementary
  • D.C. Virgo Preparatory Academy: UNCW
  • Emma B. Trask Middle School
  • College Park Elementary
  • Annie H. Snipes Academy of Arts & Design
  • New Hanover High School
  • Edwin A. Alderman Elementary
  • Winter Park Elementary
  • Mary Washington Howe Pre-K Center”

Brunswick County Schools

“Brunswick County Schools will be providing pick-up meals for all children 1-18 years of age. The district will be providing breakfast and lunch meals at North Brunswick High School, South Brunswick High School, West Brunswick High School  for pickup from 11-1:00 pm. The district will be providing these meals Monday through Friday during the school closure. Parents can pick up meals by coming to one of the sites listed. We ask that parents stay in their car and packaged breakfast and lunch meals will be brought out to them. There will be no charge to our families with children,” according to Brunswick County Schools.

Parents are also going to be allowed to check out technology devices at the schools for students.

“Monday from 11 a.m. — 4 p.m., Parents will also be allowed to check out tech devices if they do not have them at home for their children (chromebooks, laptops, tablets, etc),” according to the school system.
