WILMINGTON — The Wilmington Police Department reported Tuesday it’s investigating a hostage incident that took place in midtown on Sunday, June 28, at 7 p.m. It resulted in the suspect recovering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, while the two victims remain safe.

According to the department, officers responded to the 500 block of Camway Drive regarding a possible armed hostage situation. When arriving on the scene, the WPD confirmed a suspect was inside the residence with two victims.

Law enforcement surrounded the home and set up a safe perimeter to resolve the situation and maintain residence containment. When the suspect exited the home, one of the hostages was in tow. Upon entering an SUV in the parked driveway, the suspect fired a weapon resulting in a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The person was transported by EMS to Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center. Though the suspect is recuperating from a life-threatening condition, the two victims are safe and and receiving support.

Detectives continue investigating, with WPD saying the incident is isolated and the public is not in danger. No additional information is available.
