WPD traffic stop leads to fentanyl, methamphetamine trafficking charges

WILMINGTON — A Wilmington man is being held without bond following a Sunday afternoon traffic stop that led to the discovery of a significant quantity of narcotics.

Officers with the Wilmington Police Department stopped a vehicle in the 700 block of Anderson Street around 12:50 p.m. on Sunday after observing a traffic violation. During the stop, officers reported the odor of marijuana coming from the car, which provided probable cause for a search of the vehicle.

During the search, WPD officers located a bag belonging to 30-year-old James Ware. Inside, officers found approximately 10 grams of fentanyl, more than 165 grams of methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia, and an undisclosed amount of cash.

Ware was arrested and is currently facing several charges, including trafficking in opium or heroin, possession with intent to manufacture, sell, or deliver a Schedule II controlled substance, trafficking in methamphetamine, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Ware is currently being held at the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center. He will have his first appearance on May 4 at 2 p.m. in the New Hanover County Courthouse, courtroom 100.
