The Agenda: Local government meetings this week

SOUTHEASTERN N.C. — Every Monday Port City Daily will share upcoming government and community meetings around the tri-county region. If there’s an item of public interest, it will be included, too.

Monday, Dec. 8

The Brunswick County Planning Board will meet at 4 p.m. in Commissioner’s Chambers, 30 Government Center Drive in Bolivia. The agenda includes consideration of two previously denied developments, Willow Haven and Woodland Reserve. Also, consideration of the proposed Riverbank at Ocean Isle Planned Development, consisting of 115 single-family units on about 45 acres located off of Highway 17.  

Tuesday, Dec. 9

The New Hanover County Board of Elections will hold its regular meeting on at 5:30 p.m. in the Board Room at the Board of Elections Office, 226 Government Center Dr., to conduct regular business and discuss election-related matters. Limited in-person seating will be available. Members of the public may also livestream here

The Burgaw Board of Commissioners will meet at 4:30 p.m. in the Burgaw Town Center, 108 East Wilmington Street. The agenda includes Consideration of a text amendment to the Unified Development Ordinance for Tree Board. Also, the swearing-in ceremony for Mayor Elect Olivia Dawson and Commissioners James Malloy and Myra McDuffie. The meeting will be uploaded here.

The Pender County Board of Education will meet at 5 p.m. in the Dr. Katherine Herring Resource Center, 798 U.S. Highway 117. Meetings are livestreamed here. The agenda includes:

  • Update from transportation department
  • Pre-K Grant Application Year 2

The New Hanover County Schools Policy Committee will meet at 1 p.m. in the Board of Education Center, 1805 S. 13th St. Meetings are livestreamed here. The agenda can be viewed here.

Carolina Beach Town Council will meet at 6 p.m. at 1121 N. Lake Park Blvd. The agenda includes the swearing in of new council members (read PCD coverage here) and the mayor, as well as committee appointments. The meeting can be streamed here

Oak Island Town Council will meet at 6 p.m. at the town hall council chambers. The agenda includes swearing in of new members and the mayor, as well as consideration of extending the abatement period for enforcement of right-of-way violations. Meetings can be streamed here.

Wilmington Housing Authority’s Board of Directors will meet at 4 p.m., immediately followed by the Housing and Economic Opportunities, Inc. (HEO) Board of Directors Meeting. Thereafter, the Glover Plaza, Inc. Board of Directors Meeting will take place. All meetings are held at Rankin Terrace.

Wednesday, Dec. 10

The Topsail Beach Board of Commissioners will meet at 6 p.m. in the Topsail Beach Town Hall. The agenda includes consideration of the 2026 Topsail Sounds Summer concert dates. Also, the oath of office ceremony for council members Nancy Kerr Thomason, John Best and Alex Arab as well as for Mayor Frank Braxton. The meeting will livestream here

CFPUA Authority Board meets at 9 a.m. at 230 Government Center Dr. An agenda was not published by press.

Oak Island Board of Adjustment meets at 10 a.m. in council chambers at town hall with only one item on the agenda — a variance request regarding a 2-foot encroachment into the required side setback of the R-6 zoning district.

The New Hanover Community Endowment hosts its public meeting and listening session at 5:30 p.m. at Cape Fear Community College’s Union Station, 502 N. Front St. Endowment leaders will give updates and attendees are encouraged to ask questions; learn more here

Thursday, Dec. 11

The Surf City Planning Board will meet at 4 p.m. in the Surf City Municipal Complex, 214 W. Florence Way. The agenda was not posted by press. 

The Topsail Island Shoreline Protection Committee will meet at 2 p.m. in the Topsail Beach Town Hall. The agenda includes an update on the vitex dune project and review of accomplishments in 2025 and goals for 2026. The meeting will stream here

The North Carolina State Ports Authority Board of Directors will meet in person at 9 a.m. The meeting will take place in the Board Room of the North Carolina Maritime Building, 2202 Burnett Boulevard. Members of the public may join in person and an agenda wasn’t published by press.

The Wilmington Historic Preservation Commission will meet at 5:30 p.m. in city hall, 929 N. Front St. Meetings are livestreamed here. The agenda includes:

  • 32 North Front Street: Storefront renovation
  • Immanuel Presbyterian Church Manse (Parsonage), 1115 South 5th Avenue : Landmark Study list application

The New Hanover County Board of Commissioners will hold an agenda review at 4 p.m. in the NHC Government Center, 230 Government Center Drive. Meetings are livestreamed here. An agenda was not posted by press.

Wrightsville Beach Board of Alderman will meet at 5:30 p.m. at 321 Causeway Dr. The agenda includes the swearing in of new aldermen and the mayor and setting the 2026 schedule.

Southport Board of Alderman will meet at 6 p.m. at 223 E. Bay St. The agenda includes the swearing in of new aldermen (read about the recount here) and the mayor (read more about Joe Pat Hatem here). Navassa Planning Board meets at 6 p.m. at 338 Main St. An agenda was not posted by press.

Friday, Dec. 12

The UNCW Board of Trustees will hold a special meeting at 12:30 p.m. in McNeil Hall on UNCW’s campus, 601 S. College Road. The agenda includes:

  • Academic program review
  • Endowment board appointment
  • Proposed tuition and fees increases
