WILMINGTON — A 24-year-old woman will serve time after pleading guilty in a hit-and-run and drunk-driving incident that left a 21-year-old deceased in 2023.
Hailey Denman Sigg pled guilty to felony death by motor vehicle, felony possession of a schedule VI controlled substance, transporting an open container of alcoholic beverage, driving while impaired, and speeding in excess of 45 miles per hour. She hit and killed a UNCW student, Mcgroary (“Rory”) John Domitrovits, in the 700 block of Eastwood Road in the fall 2023.
Frank Jones sentenced Sigg to four to six years in the department of adult correction.
Sigg was stopped on Oct. 28, 2023, just after 2:30 a.m. by an on-duty Wrightsville Beach Police Department Officer. Upon approaching the intersection of Eastwood Road and Dungannon Boulevard, the officer noticed a person splayed in the eastbound travel lane of Eastwood Road with significant injuries. Domitrovits was pronounced deceased on scene.
An Uber driver approached the scene as EMS and Wilmington Police Department officers were called and told the WB officer “the girl that hit him is down there,” directing law enforcement to Carolina Bay Drive. The Uber driver also confirmed having seen the body in the road and then witnessed the defendant waiving her arms on the side of the road. The Uber driver said he pulled over to check on the defendant, who appeared extremely upset, and she iterated she thought she hit something.
WPD encountered Sigg and the vehicle on Carolina Bay Drive and assessed her vehicle, noting damage. “It was also apparent based on the damage that she was traveling above the posted speed limit of 45 miles per hour when the collision occurred,” according to a release from the District Attorney’s office regarding court records.
Upon being questioned, the defendant told officers she hit something, unsure whether it was an animal or person. She admitted to driving the vehicle involved in the incident and drinking downtown before driving. She did a roadside standardized field sobriety test and showed signs of impairment and upon being asked her level of intoxication on scale of 1 (lowest) to 10, she told officers she was 6.5. They arrested the Sigg and she provided a breath sample that was at 0.18, with a blood sample showing her alcohol content was 0.19.
Officers found an open container of tequila in the vehicle and a vape pen in the defendant’s purse containing tetrahydrocannabinols isolated from the resin of marijuana. They also retrieved the vehicle’s crash data recording device, which indicated the defendant was driving the vehicle 84 miles per hour at the time of impact.
“Driving while impaired is not just reckless; it’s senseless in an age where ride-share apps provide a safe and easy alternative,” according to District Attorney Jason Smith. “Hailey Sigg’s selfish decision to drive intoxicated on the night of October 28, 2023 not only took the life of Rory Domitrovits, but took a son away from his parents, and brother away from his siblings. I implore anyone who is planning to drink to come up with a plan to get home safely.”
