11K gallons of treated chlorinated wastewater released

Water is a necessity of life, but in the Cape Fear Region getting that water comes with a sometimes high price (Port City Daily/File)

BRUNSWICK COUNTY — An area public utility has released a notice due to a treated chlorinated wastewater spill.

On Thursday, July 18, Brunswick County Public Utilities experienced a bypass of treated chlorinated wastewater at the Shallotte Wastewater Treatment Plant, 349 Forest Street Extension in Shallotte. A release noted it occurred when a construction-related incident impacted installation of a new force main.

The county was notified around 3 p.m. and had the force main isolated an hour later, by 4 p.m. Roughly 11,213 gallons were released of the treated chlorinated water. Of that, one-tenth, or 1,000 gallons, reached Williams Branch.

Remediation of the affected site is ongoing and no action is needed by the public.
